  1. You should be able to find more detailed technology while doing a web search, but basically - when the coastline is altered in some way, the patterns of erosion change. Sand moves naturally from place to place depending on storm events. Many places have put up rip rap - a bunch of big rocks along their coast to control erosion. You can also put up long rock walls that go out into the sea a bit to trap sand. And there are other methods that involve using concrete, putting sandbars out in the sea to reduce the wave energy that comes in, etc. The problem is that most of the the things done to control erosion also make the beaches less desirable to visitors, as they just aren't pretty.
  2. Build a breakwater off the coast. Breakwaters minimize the actions of waves, and what waves you do get deposit sediments rather than wash them away
