How can I divide the bays of my 2-car gargage?

I want to place a divider in my 2-car garage to seperate the 2 bays. One bay will be kept nice while the other can keep all the clutter. Is there a cost effective way to accomplish this while still being asthetically pleasing and non-permanent (i.e. curtain, accordian wall, ...)? Anyone have epxerience with this?

  1. accordian wall sounds better and more sophisticated
  2. I would probably build some partitions. That way you could move them, or remove them very easily.
  3. I used a pleasing green polyethylene tarp for the same thing for years. I attached it to the ceiling with 2" X 2" stringer boards the full length, and heavier 2" X 4" boards on the bottom, to keep the tarp taught. I ended up using some masonry nails to hold the bottom stringers still. It served well for years.
  4. install two collapsible accordion type sliding doors. easily installed and easily removed. Can be opened and closed when needed.
  5. If you want it to be set up so that it is not convenient to let things slop over from one side to the other, consider a knee wall. It only needs to be 3' tall or so, you can leave a gap in it for access, and you can see over it. I would build it with the drywall on 24" centers, since it is really only a divider.
